During this time, there is both light from behind the liquid crystal and reflected light from the front. Therefore, fully transmissive liquid crystals require the use of a backlight, while reflective liquid crystals do not require a backlight. Semi-transmissive liquid crystals may or may not use a backlight. An LCD screen without a backlight cannot see the display in the dark.
